Risen Lord Update #4
Last week’s email about our third meeting with Risen Lord Lutheran Church seemed to stir up a lot of conversation! After hearing a few comments, questions, and concerns from some of you, I would like to make a few more clarifications.
First of all, I want to invite you all to join us on Sunday, October 17th, between services (10:15-10:45) for a brief Q&A session. This will be a time to hear from those leading this conversation and ask any remaining questions you may have.
Second, please remember the two upcoming opportunities for partnership and fellowship with Risen Lord – The Harvest Walk on October 3rd and the Trunk or Treat on October 30th. Both of these events will give us a chance to interact with their members and see the facility.
Now, some answers to a few specific questions:
1) How did this all come about?
This process has unfolded organically, and we believe it is guided by the Spirit. Through several mutual connections, the two congregations were made aware of one another and of our similarities in approach and theology. We’ve entered into these conversations to explore ministry opportunities together and to consider a possible plan for Tapestry to relocate to the Risen Lord campus.
2) Are we merging into one church?
No! We are currently exploring a model where we would essentially be two congregations in one location. We would retain our name, structure, and worship services. This would allow us to retain our separate identities but share space and meaningful ministry when appropriate. We believe such sharing and innovation would be beneficial to both congregations.
3) Will we still worship at the same time?
Although we have not worked out anything official, with Risen Lord having multiple spaces available for worship services, we believe that both congregations would be able to worship on Sunday mornings. We are envisioning a time where participants in all three current services (one Risen Lord and two Tapestry) could converge for a time of “common ground” and fellowship before or after worship.
4) What about our current facility?
We are one year into a three-year lease. It has not been determined if we can break the lease early or not. In the event that we cannot, ministry teams from both congregations would work together to find an appropriate use for it.
5)What is the appeal?
While many like our current facility, its size is already limiting our ministry capacity. With the cost of land and building materials at record highs, the prospect of Tapestry building its own facility anytime soon is low. Risen Lord is within our original target location, is near many neighborhoods and an elementary school, and is in a rapidly expanding area. Further, sharing space would allow both congregations to share the burden of ownership and maintenance so that more financial resources could be leveraged for meaningful ministry and outreach opportunities.
I hope this helps answer some of your questions. If not, please reach out to me - or plan to join us in person on October 17th.
Blessings,
Cory
