The members of the Joint Ownership Team, composed of equal members from both congregations, have been meeting together regularly and are pleased to present our vision for our future life together in shared mission, ministry, and ownership.
These efforts have taken place in our local context while our larger denominations, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), are continuing bilateral dialogue to define a new ecumenical relationship for common mission and ministry.
While we remain two distinct congregations, we’ve discovered along the way that there are far more similarities than differences and almost complete alignment on our primary mission and values:
Our shared belief that God seeks unity within the body of Christ on earth - “the church of Christ upon earth is essentially, intentionally, and constitutionally one” (Thomas Campbell, DOC) and “the unity of the church, as it is proclaimed in the Scriptures, is a gift and goal of God in Christ Jesus” (Vision of the ELCA).
Our shared values of seeking justice and loving others through action and service, especially among the “least of these.”
Our shared mission of welcoming all people (Open & Affirming), inviting everyone to God’s Table (open communion), articulating an inclusive theology, and being agents of radical hospitality in our community.
Over the past 15 months, our congregations have continued to navigate the complexities of sharing space and resources, we have grown from opportunities for education and fellowship, and we are pioneering a new frontier as we collaborate, share, and practice a faithful stewardship of resources.
The Leadership Team of Risen Lord and the Board of Tapestry have both unanimously passed resolutions to support and empower the members of the Joint Ownership Team to prayerfully and intentionally work toward creating a recommendation for moving from a shared space agreement to an agreement of joint ownership of the property.
