Join us this Sunday as we begin the series, The Gifts of the Jews.

The famous phrase says that we stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us. While we often excel at remembering individuals, we sometimes struggle to identify the impact that people have made collectively.

In this short but powerful series, based on the Thomas Cahill book, The Gifts of the Jews: How a Tribe of Desert Nomads Changed the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels, we’ll be looking at a few ways that our spiritual ancestors helped change the nature of religion and considering their implications for our modern lives.

Genesis 12:1-9

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” 4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot and all the possessions that they had gathered and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran, and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, 6 Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. 8 From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east, and there he built an altar to the Lord and invoked the name of the Lord. 9 And Abram journeyed on by stages toward the Negeb.

Advent Book Study

Join us via Zoom on Tuesdays, beginning Nov 19th, at 6:30 pm for our Advent book study. Because of Thanksgiving, we need to skip a week. Here are the dates of the study, all at 6:30 pm: Nov. 19 and Dec. 3, 10, and 17.

We will be reading "The Christmas Letters: Celebrating Advent With Those Who Told the Story First," by Magrey deVega. Using passages from Romans, I John, Philippians, and Colossians, we will look at the first attempts by the church to understand and celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation. They point us to the origins of what we believe about Jesus, fully human and fully divine.

Share Your Favorite Fall Bread

Thanksgiving and fall breads like pumpkin, cranberry, or apple go together perfectly. We would love for you to bring your favorite fall bread to share on Thankfulness Sunday, November 24, when Risen Lord and Tapestry will worship together. While worship will begin at 10:30 a.m., please come at 10:00 a.m. to enjoy a sampling of delicious breads and fellowship. The People's Book Club

This book club welcomes anyone interested in reading, even if it's just one title that you want to read and discuss. We always have great snacks and beverages. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every other month, September, November, January, March and May. Then we take July off for summer reading at your leisure. We have interesting discussions of the books we read and invite anyone interested to come!
